Your comment regarding avoiding stereotyping black guys and going in the Carlton Banks direction, let me just say this, black guys are ALWAYS stereotyped as ghetto/thugs in movies and television. Many of them are not like this, so in my opinion it's refreshing that they show them in this light as well. It's like how they always portray Asian men as nerdy and weak or kung fu fighters. Don't you get sick of it knowing that many of you are just regular guys next door?

My only issue is that they never show black girls/women, and if they do they're always loud, obnoxious, fat and ghetto. Not fair, considering 95% of black women around the world are NOT African-Americans therefore have no chance of fitting these stereotypes.

Anyway, btw, Jason from the Power Rangers was Native American, not white. But he was later replaced by Tommy, a white guy, who also happened to have been the white ranger and made the new leader.

THIS is the problem the writer finds with current media portrayals of people of color? That SOMETIMES they include a token minority?

Seems to me the larger problem he SHOULD focus on is how the lead characters are almost always white. Or how minority-centered media is so often white-washed to appeal to larger demographics.

Yes sometimes it can be a little heavy-handed when one character is clearly inserted for diversity. But isn't the larger point to make sure there are MORE diverse main characters? And that more stories are produced, directed, and acted in by people of color?

Just because you're an "Asian man" (or any other person of color for that matter) doesn't give you a free pass to still make incredibly privileged comments.

Sincerely,
Must agree with your observations. Spot on. Having grown up in Detroit, I was a white kid with mostly black and Middle-Eastern friends so these odd pair ups always stand out to me.

My guess on the racial make up was that the producers are trying to mimic national ethnic demographics in these teams. If so, then soon these teams will need to be 2.9 Latino kids, 2.3 black kids, 1.4 white kids and 1.2 Asian kids. But which Asian nationality? Do kids from India relate to Chinese kids more than whites? Will the nerd eventually be a Chinese computer geek? The mind reels.

Thanks for a great read!

I was too distracted wondering why all the male power rangers were wearing neck braces to notice the uniform colors. But now that you mention it, they could have found a cuter Asian girl.
