Great post! By the way, I voted for blobs. I know mike from frommidnight.blogspot.com would be proud. His love for blobs is quite tremendous!

Hmmm, Frankenstein-based, zombie-based and mummy-based stories are (to Hollywood at least) reanimation terror. Are we scared of not just dying, but that life post death is actually crappier than staying dead?

Frankenstein is in reality a very sad story of betrayal, love, loneliness and rejection, although the popular image has just about removed all the richness from the story leaving a hollow shell of a stumbling kill-all monster who can’t even speak. If any geek reading this hasn’t read the book, you really must – it’s free/out of copyright and waaaaay better than you think it will be if you’ve seen popular culture references.

I would be interested to see if we get a new round of Jeckyl and Hyde-based horror any time. Surely the most terrifying subject for any horror, yet oft overlooked – losing your cognitive control/psychotic breakdowns. Again, great novel, worth a read. But what could be scarier than losing your mind, and knowing you are losing it. Especially up until the past 20 or so years, when treatment meant incarceration in a padded cell until you died, or strong drugs and isolation, or ‘Bedlam’ (a Victorian mental institution that used to charge for spectators to come and laugh at the crazies)…

My vote is for Cthulhu. Not only is he currently being plastered all over my internet in the form of comics, plush toys, candy, porn, etc., but there’s also this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1118070/

Vampiric love in and of itself may cause only minimal personal harm, it is a dangerous habit.
